    (On front of base:) Marquis de Lafayette/1757-1834/Carved by /David Gilmore Blythe/1847-48 (On back of base:) David Blythe, an itinerant artist,/came to Uniontown in 1847 where/in the old West School house/he carved this eight foot statue/from two-inch poplar planks/pinned together/Uniontown Area Historical Society (On right side of base:) This statue stood/for some 40 years/(from 1848 until 1890)/on the tower/of the old courthouse,/some 65 feet above Main Street/Connellsville Historical Society unsigned

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture was commissioned for the belfry of the original Fayette County Courthouse, but when the courthouse was demolished in 1890, the sculpture was removed and later placed in the lobby of the new Fayette County Courthouse. The piece was originally painted by Joshua Speer of Uniontown in a gun-metal gray. The high hat that Lafayette holds was fashioned by local tinsmith Joseph Wylie.
