Remarks:
The sculpture was built under the Works Progress Administration, possibly as part of a renovation of the Paris Fish Hatchery in the 1930s. Robert Fortney, the hatchery supervisor who is said to have designed the sculpture, named the figure Sun-Fe-Toe, reportedly after an area chief. It was nick-named "Chief Wah-hoo" by WPA workers. The actual construction of the work was done by Richard Baker, a worker at the hatchery. IAS files contain a related article from the Pioneer (Big Rapids, MI), Nov. 9, 1985, pg. A1, 8.
