Description:
Several limestone sculptures adorn niches in the facade of a building. The sculptures include figures of a male graduate in cap and gown holding a diploma in his proper right hand; a portrait of Knute Rockne wearing a football uniform and holding a football in his proper left hand; two Irish terriers in profile facing each other; a seated scholar with an hour glass in his proper right hand and a book in his proper left hand and two seated scholars on the north facade of the building. Gargoyles extend from the corners of the building. A free-standing figure of the Madonna and child adorn the north entrance to the building. She wears a crown and holds lilies and a cross in her proper right hand. She holds the infant Christ in her proper left arm. The infant holds an orb in his proper left hand. His proper right hand is upraised in a gesture of blessing.

The sculpture entitled "The Graduate" is popularly known as "Joe College". "The Graduate" was sculpted by Kormendi. The other figures on the building were sculpted by unknown artists. The building was constructed in 1931 and the figures were installed between 1931 and the mid-1940s. IAS files contain copy of related correspondence.
