The memorial consists of an octagonal granite column featuring a rectangular bronze relief plaque that depicts a soldier and an allegorical figure of Columbia. Columbia stands on the right dressed in a full-length gown and cape. She holds a sword in her proper left hand and offers a laurel branch to the soldier with her proper right hand. Remarks:
The memorial commemorates veterans of all United States wars. The cost was $4,000. The relief plaque is by C. W. Angell, and the granite column and
shield
were salvaged when the old Detroit Post Office was demolished in 1932. In 1932, the University of Michigan purchased remains from the Post Office for $200 as part of the Architectural School's efforts to salvage and collect architectural remnants, and it is very possible that the column and
shield
were included in this purchase. The memorial was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 30, 1932. For related information see: Ypsilanti Press, May 30, 1932; historic files at the University of Michigan's Architectural School. IAS files contain an unpublished excerpt from Einar Kvaran's "An Annotated Inventory of Outdoor Sculpture of Washtenaw County," 1989.
