(Upper plaque, raised:) IN MEMORIAM/U.S.S. MAINE/DESTROYED IN HAVANA HARBOR/FEBRUARY 15TH 1898/THIS TABLET IS CAST FROM METAL RECOVERED FROM THE USS MAINE (Carved between plaques, raised:) PRo PATRIA (Lower plaque, raised:) ERECTED BY/THE SCHOOL CHILDREN AND/CITIZENS OF RUTHERFORD/UNDER THE AUSPICES OF/JOHN T. HILTON CAMP No. 3 U.S.W.V./MAY 30TH 1914 signed Founder's mark appears. Description:  A block topped with an anchor. The front of the block has two plaques with inscriptions. The upper plaque also has a relief of a woman holding a shield with her proper right hand raised in benediction. The center of the shield displays the United States Seal, and the background features a branch and a sword among rocks. Erected by the school children and citizens of Rutherford under the auspices of the John T. Hilton Camp No. 3 U.S.W.V., in memory of the U.S.S. Maine. The upper plaque was cast from metal recovered from the U.S.S. Maine and the anchor is a replica of an anchor from a U.S.S. Maine lifeboat. The original anchor was stolen in 1925.
