Description:
Three architectural relief panels depicting scenes from the life of St. Edmund Campion. The bottom scene shows him as a student seated at a medieval reading desk. He is seen in profile, dressed in a long cassock. Above him at the left is a harp, a symbol of his Irish origins, and at the right, a pair of St. Peter's keys, symbolizing his conversion to Catholicism. The middle scene shows St. Edmund in profile kneeling in prayer and lifting a sacrificial bowl with both hands. To his left is a crooked staff, indicating his mission as an itinerant monk on his return to England and to his right is a large Roman numeral "X" indicating the ten theses he wrote on his conversion. The upper scene depicts St. Edmund's martyrdom with him splayed on a rack. To his left is a hangman's noose and to his right, a prison tower. A fourth panel at the top depicts the dove of the Holy Spirit descending with rays of glory. All four panels are framed by columns of fire, symbolizing St. Edmund's theological theses regarding fire as a symbol of religious purification.

Remarks:
Edmund Campion, 1540-1581, was an English Jesuit martyr. In 1573 he fled England for Rome where he joined the Society of Jesus. He returned to England as an itinerant missionary, but was arrested, tortured, and executed. He was canonized in 1970. Fletcher Thompson was the architect of the building and Milford Concrete Company helped in fabricating the panels.
