    Remarks:
The monument honors men from Greenfield who died during the Civil War. The total cost of the monument was $8,902 of which the artist was paid $7,000. The town began investigating ways to honor the war dead at a town meeting held on March 5, 1866, but the vote to erect a monument did not take place until March 1, 1869 due to lack of funding for a monument. IAS files contain a copy of the original contract and artist sketches for the monument; the dedication program; a transcription of an article from the Amherst Record, Oct. 12, 1870, pg. 2; and articles from The Recorder (Greenfield, MA), May 8, 1992, pg. 2 and March 24, 1992, pg. 1-8.
