Located 20 West 9th Street, Kansas City, Missouri
Remarks:
Commissioned in 1888 by the New York Life Insurance Company who owned the building at that time. While there is agreement that the eagle is from the studio of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, there is disagreement as to whether he himself created the piece, or if it was sculpted by his brother Louis. The building is a Kansas City landmark. IAS files include an excerpt from "There is No Limit;" articles from the Kansas City Star, Feb. 18, 1934 and Oct. 23, 1983; a Kansas City Map of Landmarks from the Kansas City Landmarks Commission, and an excerpt from the book, "Kansas City: a Place in Time," (Kansas City, MO: Landmarks Commission of Kansas City, Missouri, 1977, pg. 21).
