The exedra terminates on either side in a carved dolphin. The exedra is covered in a relief depicting waves that symbolize Farragut's devotion to a life on the sea. The waves flow over an unsheathed sword and two seated female figures carved in relief on either side. The female figure on the right is Courage and the one on the left is Loyalty. On the back, along the top, are symbols of fire and the seaman's rope knot.

    Remarks:
The bronze sculpture is St. Gauden's first public commission. Stanford White designed the pedestal exedra and St. Gaudens decorated it with stylized reliefs. St. Gaudens' bronze statue of Farragut was originally located on Fifth Avenue near the edge of Madison Square at 26th Street, but was shifted a few feet in 1909 when Fifth Avenue was widened. In 1935 the statue was relocated to the northern edge of Madison Square Park and at that time the original bluestone pedestal and exedra designed by White had eroded so severely that it had to be replaced. (The original bluestone base was moved to Saint-Gaudens N.H.S., Cornish New Hampshire, see IAS record NH000547). Karl Gruppe supervised a WPA team of artists in carving a replica in Coopersberg black granite. IAS files contain complete transcription of the inscriptions that appear on the sides of the exedra. IAS files also contain a copy of the Wall Street Journal, May 14-15, 2011, pg. C13 describing the modeling and casting process in Paris.
