    Remarks:
The memorial marks the graves of Hamilton Fish (1808-1893), his wife Julia Kean Fish (1816-1887), and their daughter, Elizabeth Stuyvesant Fish d'Hauteville (1839-1864). Hamilton Fish was a governor and senator of New York, and Secretary of State during the Grant Administration. Stanford White collaborated in the design of the memorial, particularly the design of the cross. Initial designs depicted the women kneeling, with one holding an infant. This may have been in homage to Fish's daughter Elizabeth, who might have died in childbirth. At Fish's request the design was modified. IAS files contain excerpt from John H. Dryfhout's "The Work of Augustus Saint-Gaudens," University of New England Press, 1982, pg. 199 (which lists date of sculpture as 1892). IAS files also contain excerpt from Homer Saint-Gardens, ed., "The Reminiscences of Augustus Saint Gaudens," New York: Century Company, 1913, 2 vols., pg. 108, 355.
