    Remarks:
The statue commemorates orator and politician John Parker Hale (1806-1873). Hale served in the New Hampshire state legislature, was District Attorney under President Jackson; U.S. Congressman and Senator, and after the Civil War served as U.S. minister to Spain. He is perhaps best known for his stance against slavery and the "measure of ambition" text on the monument is a quote a debate with Franklin Pierce in Concord.
The sculpture was a gift to the state from Hale's son-in-law, William E. Chandler, himself a U.S. Senator from New Hampshire. He proposed the idea in April of 1890. The sculpture was cast and dedicated in 1892. IAS files contain copy of "The Statue of John P. Hale, erected in front of the Capitol and presented to the State of New Hampshire by William E. Chandler of Concord...," 1892; and excerpt from David Ruell's "The Public Sculpture of New Hampshire," (typescript, New Hampshire Historical Society, Concord), pg. 135-138.
