Located Mt. Vernon Place, Northwest corner of the Washington Monument, Baltimore, Maryland 21201
    Provenance:
Formerly located Mt. Vernon Place, West Garden, Baltimore, Maryland 21201 1885-1916.
    Remarks:
This sculpture is one of five bronzes by Barye that were given to the City of Baltimore by wealthy businessman William Thompson Walters in 1885. Originally, all five were installed in the West Garden of Mt. Vernon Place. In 1916, due to landscaping improvements, all five bronzes were relocated to the area around the Washington Monument.
The sculpture is a copy of a stone sculpture Barye created in the late 1950s for the top of the columns on the facade of the Louvre in Paris.
