Object Type:

Owner:
Elk BPOE Lodge 12, 2201 Woodlawn Street, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania 17101
Provenance:
Formerly located Reservoir Park, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania 1906-1976.
Remarks:
In 1906, the Grand Lodge of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks erected the elk sculpture in Reservoir Park in front of a monument with a bronze bust of Meade D. Detweiler (IAS record PA000999), a former leader of the Elks grand lodge. In March 1976, vandals removed the bronze bust of Detweiler and toppled the elk, breaking its antler. After the elk was repaired it was installed in front of the Elk lodge. IAS files contain an excerpt from an unidentified newspaper and a list of the names that appear on the base plaque.
