Remarks:
Joseph Wadsworth (1647-1730) allegedly saved the colonial charter in 1687 by hiding it in the Charter Oak tree.
One of six statues and five bas-relief scenes on the Capitol's north facade, all associated with significant figures and events from the pre-Revolutionary War history of Connecticut. The sculptural ornamentation on the north elevation was commissioned and created as an integrated whole under the artistic supervision of
Paul
Wayland
Bartlett
. The works were commissioned by the State Commission on Sculpture primarily between 1906-1908 and dedicated July 30, 1908, with the exception this Wadsworth statue installed in 1916.
