Remarks:
The sculpture is a replica of
Frederic
Auguste
Bartholdi
's Statue of Liberty (IAS record 76003645). It honors Greene County soldiers who gave their lives during World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Funds for the sculpture, which cost $2,000, were raised though a county legislature appropriation of $1,000 and though the memorial committee of the American Legion's Adams Jackson Post 17, which sold Memorial Certificates for $1.00 each. The original sculpture, containing the names of forty Greene County casualties from World War I, was dedicated on Armistice Day, November 11, 1924 in front of the original Greene County Courthouse. In the 1940s, marble panels were added to give space for the names of seventy-eight killed in World War II, and later for the names of two soldiers killed during the Korean War, the names of eleven soldiers killed in Vietnam, and the names of two soldiers killed in the Persian Gulf War. In 1997, the sculpture was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
IAS files contain a partial list of names on base. IAS files contain a related excerpt and historic photograph of the sculpture, taken before the flanking panels were added, from Myrl Mueller's "A History of Greene County," Little Rock, AR: Parkhurst Book Design, 1984, pg. 67. IAS files contain an excerpt from Vivian Hansbrough's "History of Greene County," 1946, pg. 87; and undated information about the sculpture project from an American Legion handbook.
