Description:
A two-stepped granite base supports a capped pedestal with two
bronze
panels to the front and back. There are three
bronze
figures in the group: a wounded color bearer, leaning to his proper right with his proper left arm held over his chest and part of a severed flagstaff cradled in his arm; a color sergeant holding the tattered flag and facing forward; and a kneeling soldier with his rifle aimed to the proper left side. The wounded soldier rests his head on the leg of the kneeling one.

Remarks:
Cost $10,000; $6,000 came from county govt., $2,000 from public subscription, and $2,000 from Dorcus Society. In 1976, the monument was moved from one location in the park to another, closer to Water Street, and was placed on a new granite base.
