    Description: 
    A Civil War soldier stands at the ready with proper left foot slightly forward, holding a rifle across his body in front of him. He holds the rifle with his proper right hand near the trigger and his proper left hand on the barrel. Across his torso, from proper left shoulder to proper right hip, a blanket roll is strapped. A pouch hangs against his rear proper left side. The soldier's hat is wide-brimmed. The sculpture is mounted upon a two-level base with a stepped bottom. The upper level has columns at each corner. Unfurled flags in relief appear on the front and rear. A cornice caps the larger, lower level.

    The sculpture cost $2,500. It was installed by the Longstreet Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in honor of Confederate soldiers. The sculpture is affectionately known in Gainesville as "Old Joe."
