    Description: 
    Full-length bronze figure of George Washington dressed in military uniform. To his proper left is a column of thirteen rods, resembling a Roman fasces, which rests on the mold board of a plow. A cloak is thrown on top of this column, and Washington's proper left hand rests on this. In his proper right hand he holds a walking cane, the tip of which rests on the plinth of the sculpture. Washington is bareheaded and gazes forward. The sculpture stands on a granite base.

    Remarks: 
    Sculpture is a recast of original 1796 marble sculpture by the French artist Houdon which is located in Richmond, Virginia. It was cast by the Gorham Manufacturing Company with special permission from the Virginia General Assembly. The sculpture was acquired in 1933 by the Women's Community Service, auxiliary of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce and was presented to the city. It was accepted by the City Council on May 12, 1937 and was located in the northeast corner of the old Courthouse. In 1947 it was moved inside the old Hall of Records. In 1961 it was relocated outdoors to Civic Center Mall at the southeast corner of the Hall of Administration where it was rededicated. IAS files contain copies of City of Los Angeles inventory forms.
