    Description: 
    "Washington stands erect, head uncovered, cane in proper right hand; his proper left arm rests upon a bundle of 13 fasces -- symbolic of the 13 colonies -- upon which he has already hung his sword; behind the figure, and leaning against the fasces, is a plowshare. His clothing represents the boots and regimentals of his Revolutionary Army."

    Gift of Mr. John Thomas Lupton. Cost: $2,000. This sculpture is a bronze cast of the life-size marble portrait of George Washington made by Jean Antoine Houdon for the Virginia capitol in Richmond. IAS files contain transcription of article from University of Virginia Alumni Bulletin 6 (1913) which mentions donor.
