(Base, front plaque:) THIS STATUE OF GEORGE WASHINGTON BY JEAN ANTOINE HOUDON/WAS CREATED FROM THE ORIGINAL MARBLE STATUE OF GEORGE WASHINGTON/IN THE STATE CAPITOL OF VIRGINIA./HOUDON WAS COMMISSIONED BY THOMAS JEFFERSON AND BENJAMIN/FRANKLIN FOR THIS WORK IN 1784, AND HE ACCOMPANIED FRANKLIN TO/AMERICA TO MODEL WASHINGTON IN CLAY AND PLASTER. FOR TWO WEEKS,/AT MT. VERNON, WASHINGTON SAT FOR HIM AS HE PREPARED HIS SKETCHES, MODELED THE BUST, AND TOOK A PLASTER CAST OF THE FACE OF OUR FIRST/PRESIDENT.
THIS REPLICA IN BRONZE IS FROM THE LIVING WASHINGTON/CREATED IN MARBLE BY HOUDON'S GENIUS. ALL WHO SEE IT SHOULD BE/INSPIRED BY THE COURAGE AND NOBILITY OF THE MAN WHO TURNED A/HOPELESS CAUSE INTO A WORLD-RESOUNDING VICTORY./IN 1853, VIRGINIA GRANTED AUTHORITY TO MAKE SIX COPIES IN/BRONZE. IN 1910, THE GORHAM COMPANY WAS AUTHORIZED TO MAKE/REPLICAS IN BRONZE FROM MOLDS TAKEN FROM THE ORIGINAL STATUE./
THESE STATUES ARE LOCATED IN MUSEUMS AND CAPITALS OF TEN STATES/AND FOUR FOREIGN COUNTRIES, INCLUDING SUCH NOTABLE LOCATIONS AS/THE NATIONAL STATUARY HALL IN OUR NATION'S CAPITOL, VALLEY FORGE,/PA., VERSAILLES PALACE, FRANCE, AND TRAFALGAR SQUARE, LONDON,/ENGLAND. THE LAST AND FINAL STATUE, THE MOLDS NO LONGER IN/EXISTENCE, IS BEFORE YOUR HERE IN JEFFERSON MEMORIAL PARK. signed
