Remarks:
One of six casts by Hubard from a mold of Houdon's "Washington" in the rotunda of theVirginia State Capitol. The sculpture was intended to replace a marble sculpture of Washington by Antonio Canova that was destroyed when the North Carolina State House burned in 1831. (In 1970 a replica was placed in the rotunda of the Capitol -see IAS record number 76005424.)
