    Description:
Sculpture consists of ten figures engulfed in a flame. The figures are robust in appearance and seem to be rising out of the flame. A maternal figure dominates the top of the piece; she looks upward with upstretched arms. At the rear, an old man falls into the fire but not before handing the Torah to a young man who ascends from the flame. The sculpture stands on a hexagonal base. In front of the base is a gas-fed eternal flame. The whole work rests on a concrete mound whose pock-marked appearance represents bullet holes.

    Remarks:
Commissioned by the Holocaust Committee of the Temple B'Nai Israel. The idea for the memorial was initiated in 1988. The artist is himself a Holocaust survivor. The sculpture is illuminated at night with four floodlights and the eternal flame is lit on the Sabbath and on Holy Days. There are ten figures at the request of the Temple, for ten or "Minyan" in Jewish symbolism represents a congregational whole. The six figures who are directly enflamed represent the six million Jews lost in the Holocaust. IAS files include a related article from the "Jewish Press of Pinellas County," (Florida), April 6, 1990 and additional information.
