Remarks:
Rachel Morris Horrell Gayle was born on June 1, 1822 in Cape Girardeau, Mississippi, near Jackson, the daughter of John and Sophia (Weems) Horrell. She married John E. Gayle on Sept. 24, 1840. The couple moved to New Orleans in 1857. Mrs. Gayle was a noted New Orleans hostess, and entertained Jefferson Davis among others. Her husband founded Horrell, Gayle and Company, a New Orleans commission house. She died on Oct. 30, 1903 in Missouri where she returned after the death of her husband.
