    Description: 
    Portrait of Father Junipero Serra striding forward with a large cross held high in his proper left hand and his proper right hand raised in benediction. He is dressed in long robes which swirl around him as he walks. The sculpture rests on a tall, square base.

    Remarks: 
    Junipero Serra was a Franciscan father who founded the California Missions. The sculpture was funded by James D. Phelan and cost $10,000. IAS files contain an excerpt from The Arts Commission of San Francisco's "San Francisco Civic Art Collection: A Guided Tour to Publicly Owned Art of the City and County of San Francisco," San Francisco, CA: Arts Commission of San Francisco, 1989, pg. 61; and a transcription of an article from The Call (Nov. 18, 1907).
