Machinery and Electricity Building, (sculpture).
Artist:
Bock, Richard W., 1865-1949, sculptor.
Title:
Machinery and Electricity Building, (sculpture).
Dates:
1897-1898.
Description:
For the Machinery and Electricity Building at the 1898 Trans-Mississippi Exposition in Omaha, Richard W. Bock created the four figure groups on the corners of the building and an elevated central figure group on the front of the building. The theme of the building's artwork was "Man's Struggle for Control of Nature's Forces." For two corners, the figure groups depicted a strong man strangling a lion that rears on its hind legs while another man falls to the ground. For the two other corners, the figure groups depicted a man standing with one foot on a prostrate lion, a spear and shield protecting a woman and a child with a dog who look down at the lion. The central figure group depicted a male figure standing in a chariot, pulled by five lions. A figure stood on each side holding an emblem, one depicting machinery and the other depicting electricity. Four eagles appear on the supporting columns.
