Description:
Classical landscape with a female figure in the foreground kneels on a step before a shrine with an image of the Virgin Mary holding a baby Christ. In the center is Lake Nemi; on the hilltop in the background is the town of Nemi.

Remarks:
Exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1846 as "View of Lago de Nemi, Near Rome." Paired by the artist with "L'Allegro" (IAP record 02960179). Both paintings are based on poems by John Milton, translating the overall meaning of the poem into a landscape.
