    Remarks:
The sculpture was commissioned in 1973 by North Carolina National Bank and Carter and Associates, developers of Independence Square plaza, adjacent to the NCNB Tower and Radisson Plaza Hotel. The two companies donated the sculpture to the people of Charlotte and the Mint Museum in July 1978. The sculpture had been exhibited at an exhibition of the artist's work in 1974 at the Rotonda della Besana, Milan (Italy). In November 1980, the sculpture, marred by magic markers, paint and deep surface scratches, underwent restoration by SignArt Inc. It was sandblasted and coated with a clear urethane, and a new bearing added in its base to enable the sculpture to turn.
IAS files contain Mint Museum of Art News Release dated July 20, 1978 announcing gift of sculpture; and clippings from Charlotte News, Nov. 18, 1980; Charlotte Observer, Dec. 5, 1976, Oct. 30, 1980, Nov. 19, 1980, and June 21, 1981.
Plaque on ground in front of sculpture reads: Grande Disco/Our life today is one of crisis...of movement.../of tension. We do not know what our world/will become. I try to say something about this/uncertainty in my work. I try to communicate a/sense of vitality and connection with the movement of life today...and to be a part of its movement./The social challenge of art today, in my opinion, is to start a dialogue with the people./I hope that is what happens here with The Grande/Disco./Arnaldo Pomodoro/Oct. 2, 1974/A gift to the people of Charlotte by NCNB and Carter & Associates.
