An interior scene of a workshop with an elderly carpenter seated at an instrument used for shaving wood into ax handles. On the floor all around him are wood shavings. A barrel nearby is filled with completed ax handles, indicating that he has not been "idle," but has taken a break to think about his work. Behind him a double window sheds light across the carpenter and his workshop.
