    Description: 
    Three-tiered fountain has a hexagonal, two-stepped basin and two round scalloped-edge basins on a square, columnic form in the center. The basins are graduated in size with the smallest at top. On top of the column is a "pignol" or pineapple, an Italian symbol of life and hospitality.

    Remarks: 
    The fountain project was initiated by Father John S. DiNoto Jr. and commissioned by the Garibaldi Square Fountain Committee in honor of the Italians who emigrated to New London in early 1900s. The cost was approximately $55,000. The fountain is sited in the neighborhood in which Italian immigrants settled. IAS files include related articles from The Day (New London, CT), March 4, 1987, pg.
