Long was a former governor of Louisiana. The sculpture was commissioned in 1962 by the State Parks and Recreation Commission for the cost of $16,000. The sculpture was re-bronzed in 1993. IAS files contain copies of related commissioning contracts and correspondence between the artist, the state parks commission, and the Earl K. Long Park Commission.
