    Description:
A cast iron fountain consisting of three graduated, scallop-edged tiers. Around the lower section of the pedestal are three elaborately detailed birds, perhaps swans, whose long necks are curved so that their heads rest on their chests. Classical elements such as dentils, acanthus leaves, and fluted pedestals ornament the tiers and between. The fountain is supported by a hexagonal pedestal resting on a built-up concrete base. The fountain is set in the center of a circular pool.

    Remarks:
The fountain was erected by Mrs. Olga Baker in memory of her husband, Earl B. Baker, who died in 1954. Mr. Baker served as the president of the Appling County Chamber of Commerce, president of the Baxley Kiwanis Club, and was a charter member of the Baxley Housing Authority. The idea for the fountain originated with Ruth and John Laws of Baxley who saw a similar fountain in Thomasville, Georgia (or possibly New Orleans). Mrs. Laws, who was active in efforts to beautify the courthouse grounds, asked Mrs. Baker to donate a fountain in her husband's memory. Plaque adjacent to basin reads: IN MEMORY/OF/EARL B. BAKER/A BELOVED CIVIC LEADER. For biographical information about Mr. Baker see Ruth T. Barron's "Footprints in Appling County," Dallas: Taylor Publishing Company, 1981. IAS files contain an undated clipping from the Baxley Banner.
