    Granite obelisk with an incised bust portrait of Caesar Carpetier Antoine (1836-1921) on the upper front, wearing a moustache. The sculpture is mounted upon a short, rough-edged base and surrounded by a chain link base.

    Remarks: 
    Monument commemorates Caesar Carpetier Antoine, an influential African-American patriarch and political reformer of Reconstruction Era Shreveport. Antoine had a multifaceted career, beginning as a barber and joining the Civil War in 1862 as Captain in Company 1, 7th Regiment, Louisiana Militia. From 1868 to 1872, he served as Louisiana State Senator, and then as Lieutenant Governor, serving briefly as acting Governor. He was also a wealthy plantation owner and businessman. IAS files contain partial transcription of names on obelisk and newspaper article from The Times, Feb. 23, 1996, pg. 1D.
