    Description: 
    A bronze sculpture depicting four allegorical figures representing the "Struggle of Life" is installed in the center of a large round granite basin. The Angel of Life with mantle of truth over shoulders struggles with three male nude figures representing earthly tendencies: Duty, Passion, and Avarice. The sculpture is bathed by water from a spray ring with 234 spray outlets mounted in the granite basin. Water also flows from a pinnacle outlet into an upper basin and then into the lower basin.

    Remarks: 
    The fountain was erected through the 1898 bequest of Italian diplomat Paul Bajnotti, in memory of his wife, Caroline Mathilde Brown. A plaster cast of this fountain was displayed at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo.
    Conservation: 
    Treated 2000 October-November. Conserv/Art (Hamden, CT). Treatment report on file with owner.
