    Description: 
    Full-length figure of Jedediah Strong Smith is represented at about the age of 30. He kneels on his proper left knee as he looks off into the distance. Both hands rest on his bent proper right knee, and he holds a journal in his proper right hand. The figure wears fringed, buck-skinned clothing and has a gun on his hip.

    Remarks: 
    Jedediah Strong Smith (1798-1831) was the first explorer to reach California from the east. He and his party spent the night of Nov. 26, 1826 in San Dimas, then known as Mud Springs. IAS files contain a brochure from the San Dimas Festival of Western Arts, a project of the San Dimas Chamber of Commerce, who commissioned the sculpture.
