He is posed in mid-stride with his proper right hand nearly in a fist. His shirt is open and there are tight leggings on his calves. A round tin hat lay on the plinth behind him. Plaques on the base contain various American eagle emblems and honor rolls for 20th century wars. After two replacement rifles were stolen the hand was reconstructed and left empty. He also may have held a grenade in his proper right hand. The sculpture was painted in its current bronze coloring about 1991. Prior to 1991, it was painted in "natural" colors, including flesh tones for the face and hands.
