Remarks:
Plans for a park and monument to Admiral Esek Hopkins originated in 1891, when the city condemned the Hopkin's family burial ground at the corner of Charles Street and Branch Avenue. Hopkins was the first commander in chief of the Continental navy duriing the American revolution. Funds for the momument were provided by Harriet N. H. Coggeshall, who specified in her will that a memorial be erected to her great-grandfather. Sources differ on the statue's execution date, either ca. 1893 or 1897.
