    Description: 
    A figure, which is neither male nor female, is seated on a grey granite bench which rests against a pink granite wall. The figure's proper right arm is bent at the elbow and raised up to its face. The figure's proper right hand is turned so that its knuckles face outward; its chin rests on the back of its proper right hand. The figure's long drapery is pulled up over its head with only its face visible. The figure looks downward and its eyes appear almost shut.

    Remarks: 
    Henry Adams commissioned Saint-Gaudens to create this work in memory of his wife, Marian Hooper Adams (1843-1885), who was known as Clover. Henry Adams was a historian, teacher, author, and journalist. He was the great-grandson of President John Adams, the grandson of President John Quincy Adams, and the son of Charles Adams, the U.S. ambassador to Great Britain during the Civil War. Adams and his wife Marian were leading figures in Washington society in the period following the Civil War. Marian Adams was an invalid who committed suicide because of her ill health and depression over the death of her father. The sculpture and its setting cost $20,000. The pink granite setting and circular bench were designed by Stanford White. The sculpture is sometimes titled Grief. IAS files contain a cemetery brochure that gives an overview of the Adams' life and describes the mystery over the meaning of the figure depicted in this memorial.
