The Grotto is staffed by the Order of the Servants of Mary. It was founded in 1924 by Servite Friar Ambrose Mayer, who envisioned a place of retreat for experiencing the presence of God in nature. The sculptures were added at later various times. St. Philip Benizi was a Servite Friar who hid to avoid being elected Pope. The statue is located near the top of a 15 ft. waterfall.
