Description:
Two relief panels flank the entrance to the building, one illustrates the evolution of dentistry and the other the practice of medicine. The dentistry relief on the east side depicts three figures. On the left side stands the early dentist, a man dress in nineteenth-century clothing holding a drilling tool in his proper right hand. A vase of flowers sits by his proper left foot. The central figure, St. Apollonia, holds a cross to her chest with her proper left hand and a pair of pliers with a tooth in them in her raised proper right hand. A dove appears over her proper left shoulder and near her proper left foot is a mortar and pestle. On the right side stands the modern dentist, a man dressed in a medical lab coat holding a tool in his proper left hand. Below him is small figure of a man sitting in a dentist's chair with a nurse adjusting a piece of equipment.
The medical relief on the west side also depicts three figures. The central figure is Aesculapius holding a bowl in his raised proper hand. A snake is curled around a stick by his proper right foot. To his proper right stands the modern surgeon, a man dressed in a surgical gown, mask and cap resting his hands at his waist. At his feet is a stack of four books and a mouse appearing beside them. To Aesculapius' proper left stands the country doctor, a man dressed in a stove pipe hat and a muffler wrapped around his neck. He holds a medical bag in his proper left hand and at his feet is a small horse-drawn buggy. A rooster stands by his proper right foot.
