    Description:
Seven sculpture groupings situated throughout the grounds of Ursuline Academy. The Grotto: Lourdes of the Plains is a replica of Our Lady of Lourdes grotto in France. St. Bernadette kneels in prayer, dressed in a hooded garment, in front of the grotto. In the right uppermost niche, Mary stands, dressed in a pale blue and white hooded garment, hands clasped in prayer at her chest. In a lower niche on the left St. Anne stands in a hooded robe with the Blessed Virgin as a girl standing to her proper left. The grotto includes a painted lagoon, plants, and an inscribed tablet, and is enclosed by a stone post fence. A Calvary group is located on the cemetery central mound and includes St. John and St. Mary on separate bases in front of the crucifix. At the base of the crucifix is a kneeling female with head bowed in prayer. Two female Resurrection Angels stand on pylons flanking the cemetery entrance. The angels originally held trumpets (now missing) in their upraised hands. Also on campus are statues of two archangels, St. Michael and St. Raphael, and statues of St. Ursula and St. Angela.

    Remarks:
    Title supplied by Inventory cataloger.
The grotto was installed in 1916 by the Schaub family of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in memory of Mother Jerome's parents, Andrew and Magdalena Schaub. The rock which forms the grotto came from the bottom of Lake Erie. The grotto was dedicated in 1940 after being beautified and expanded under the supervision of Mother Jerome. In 1980, the lagoon was repainted and restored by Southside Wood and Patio (Mission, KS).
The Resurrection Angels were given in 1948 or 1949 by William J. Sheehy in memory of his wife Emma. St. Angela was donated by the George Meyer family. St. Ursula was donated by M.E. Spencer and Son. St. Michael was donated by a group of students from Mexico and blessed on the feast of St. Michael, September 29, 1954. St. Raphael was blessed on his feast day, October 24, 1954.
A trumpet was stolen from one of the Resurrection Angels and the other has been removed for safekeeping. Vandals broke the sword of St. Michael and stole the staff held by St. Raphael. Originally, St. Michael had a tile plaque of Our Lady of Guadalupe set into the front of the base. IAS files contain copies of materials from the Ursuline Academy scrapbook, including clippings from Ursuline Tidings (Feb. 1936), (April 1940) and (Feb. 1954); Signs of the Times, Nov. 9, 1980; and The Catholic Observer, Oct. 17, 1940.
