Remarks:
The monument was erected on the Hill Cumorah by the Church of Latter Day Saints to commemorate the Angel Moroni's delivery of the Book of Mormon to Joseph Smith on Sept. 22, 1827. In 1976, the sculpture of the Angel Moroni was rotated to face west, rather than north, so that he would face approaching visitors. IAS files contain an excerpt from The Ensign (July 1980): pg. 11-15 and a copy of the artist's statement. IAS image files contain photographs of lengthy inscriptions located on a base plaque and on nearby markers.
