Remarks:
The sculpture and its subsequent Visitor Center were conceived and given assistance with funding by State Senator Emilio Naranjo. Don Juan de Onate founded the colony of San Gabriel in 1598 and became New Mexico's first governor. The sculpture is also known as "El Primer Gobernador" and "Capitan General." IAS files include a brochure from the Onate Monument Center which lists the project's sponsors and article from New Mexico, May 1992, pg. 70-77.
