Portrait of Louis-Marie de Noailles about to mount his horse at the top of a plateau overlooking a battlefield where rows of cavalry troops charge across the landscape. Noailles wears the uniform of a colonel in the Chasseurs a Cheval d'Alsace, with a saber hanging from his left side. The battle scene may be a reference to his service at Colmar in 1791 or Sedan in 1792. In the lower right corner there are skeletal bones, a thistle, and a serpent, which are included as "momento mori" or allusions to the devastation of war.
