The sculpture honors Dr. Sid E. Williams, founder and president of Life College, who guided the group at its founding in 1971. The face of the eagle dancer is that of Dr. Williams.
A plaque on a nearby building reads: THE ADISI (RUNNING) EAGLE/Poised for flight, the sculpture of the/Cherokee eagle dancer atop this Sports/Science Center symbolizes the vision and/life work of Dr. Sid E. Williams, founder/and president of Life College./According to ancient Cherokee Indian/folklore, at the end of the dance the/dancer merges with the Spirit of/the Eagle, becoming a messenger/of the Great Spirit. This sculpture,/which is in the likeness of Dr. Williams,/depicts this dramatic transformation./"...They that wait upon the Lord shall/renew their strength; they shall mount up/with wings as eagles, they shall run,/and not be weary; and they shall walk,/and not faint."
