John Chandler Williams moved from Hadley, Massachusetts to Illinois in 1834 where he bought and farmed 1,000 acres of land 30 miles from Chicago, which he named Hadley. In 1841, he entered the wholesale grocery business in Chicago. He also helped to organize the Second Presbyterian Church.
