Remarks:
This double portrait depicts the two oldest children of Harriet Pattillo Brame (died 1852 in Covington, Louisiana) and George Whitman. The children are George William Whitman born 1831/1832 and Mary Elizabeth Whitman, born May 24,1833, died in Rhode Island, 1895, where she was married to Walter Manton. (A 3rd Whitman infant, Montgomery Angell Whitman 1834-1835, is buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Montgomery, AL.) Miss Harriet Brame and George Whitman, a merchant of Montgomery, Alabama, were married by Hon. N. E. Benson on December 16, 1830. The artist recorded painting this portrait in his notebook in September of 1833. There is a pianoforte in the background, and the little girl holds a silver and coral rattle. The immediate Whitman family moved from Montgomery to Louisiana during the financial panic of 1837.
