H. 4 ft. W. 3 ft.; Base: approx. W. 38 in. D. 35 in. Inscription:  Milton Horn signed Description:  Four times life-size head mounted on a tall pillar. One of eight heads which line the Merchandise Mart Plaza to honor outstanding American retail merchants. Aaron Montgomery Ward was the founder of Montgomery Ward & Company. Ward was an innovator in the mail-order business concept of buying merchandise in large quantities and selling it directly to rural America by mail. He started his company in 1872 in Chicago with $2,400. He introduced the concept of "guaranteed customer satisfaction or your money back." After retiring as president in 1894, he turned his attention to preserving Chicago's lake front from development. Sculpture was placed in storage during reconstruction of the Merchandise Mart plaza in 1989-1990. IAS image files and the Bach and Gray publication contain overview photos of all eight heads.
