This portrait of Daniel Wadsworth's father was copied and enlarged by Bryant from a painting by John Trumbull entitled "Jeremiah and Daniel Wadsworth." The Bryant portrait was commissioned by Wadsworth Atheneum founder Daniel Wadsworth for his museum, so that the original by Trumbull could be hung in his Prospect Street house in Hartford. Inscribed on stretcher: Mr. James B. Colman, Hartford, Ct. Canvas stamp reads: Prepared / By / Edwd Dechaux / New York.
