Remarks:
James Mitchell Varnum was an officer in the Continental Army, a delegate to the Continental Congress from Rhode Island, and Judge of the Northwest Territory. The painting is probably a replica of an unlocated miniature by Charles Willson Peale. The painting was purchased at the Peale Gallery sale, Oct. 1854.
