    Description: 
    "...the painter has represented the Governor, who wears the uniform of Brigadier of Engineers, standing in the middle of an ample room with the usual curtain and Rococo props. At his side upon a carved and gilded table a number of plans of San Juan are observable. Don Miguel, however, wished that allusion should be made in his portrait to one of the most important events in his term in office, namely the paving of the streets of San Juan. ...Campeche introduced a wide doorway or open window without a balcony, through which the work of paving the street outside is plainly visible."

    "In Campeche's day, San Juan was primarily a garrison city. It was limited exclusively to the islet or what today is known as Old San Juan. It consisted of a right-angle grid of six streets running from east to west and seven from north to south. The western tip was occupied by the castle of San Felipe del Morro."
